RETURNS FROM THE TRAVIS HILL SCHOOL

2016-17 Achievement Data, Parent and Student Survey Data

We opened up and held our first day of classes at the Travis Hill School on August 22, 2016.  After our first year, we have some terrific, early stage, academic achievement and parent and student survey results data to share.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS

In Louisiana, there are a handful of high school courses that have standardized, state mandated End of Course (EOC) exams. Passing the EOC is required to earn credit for the course, and earning credit in these courses is a mandatory for students to earn their high school diploma.

The charts below show the growth in the number of EOC exams passed by Travis Hill students during the 2016-17 school year, compared to students attending the previous school based at the Youth Study Center the year before. Approximately 40 students are held at the Youth Study Center each day, a number that has remained constant over the past two years.

At the Travis Hill School we do not focus on test prep—we build the curriculum based on short, thematic (change, identity, rights, justice…) units that emphasize relevance and engagement.  That said, we believe strongly that our students need to learn core academic skills and need to be able to demonstrate those skills in situations that matter in their lives.  And in Louisiana, passing your EOC exams matters—because you can’t otherwise graduate!

EOC Exams Passed

This year, Travis Hill students passed 79 EOC exams.  Last year students held at the Youth Study Center passed 19 EOC exams.

Travis Hill students passed four times as many EOC exams this year compared to last year.

Passing Four or More EOC Exams

This year nine students passed 4 or more EOC exams.  Last year no student passed more than 2 EOC tests.

PARENT AND STUDENT SURVEY RESULTS

In addition to focusing on improving our students’ academic skills, we also value the opinion of our students and parents. We conduct student surveys twice a year and reach out to parents for their feedback about the school, as well.  Below are some summary results from our 2016-17 surveys.

Parent Survey Results (based on spring 2017 parent survey):

100% of the parents who completed our survey rated the Travis Hill School as Above Average or Excellent.

100% of the parents who completed our survey indicated that they felt the Travis Hill School was Better than the previous school they attended in the community.

Student Survey Results (based on summer 2017 student survey):

79% of our students stated that they felt the Travis Hill School was Better than the previous school they attended in the community.
