OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR (PT)

Travis Hill School at the Orleans Justice Center

THE SCHOOLS. THE BACKGROUND.

There are two Travis Hill Schools (Schools) in New Orleans.  One is located inside of the Youth Study Center (YSC), the detention facility for New Orleans teens who are being held pre-trial, and the other is located inside of the Orleans Justice Center (OJC), the pretrial detention facility for adults (and teens charged as adults).

The Travis Hill Schools are run by the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings (CEEAS). CEEAS is a nonprofit organization devoted to improving schools in juvenile justice facilities across the nation.  The first Travis School opened in August 2016 at the Youth Study Center (YSC).  In late August 2017, we opened the Travis Hill School at the Orleans Justice Center (OJC). Additional information about CEEAS and the Travis Hill Schools is available at our website, www.ceeas.org.

THE SCHOOL. THE OPPORTUNITY

Approximately 1,500 individuals are held at the OJC.  We operate a full-scale school for approximately 50 students between 17 and 21 years old. Nearly all the students have faced school failure--many did not attend school regularly when they were younger, most have been suspended or expelled at some point, nearly all of them are far behind their peers academically, and 30-40% of them have special education needs. Despite this, they all have hopes and dreams, skills and talents, and family and friends who care for them.

Our mission at Travis Hill is to create a transformative learning environment where students held at the YSC develop the academic and socio-emotional skills they need to become positive, contributing members of their community when they are released.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This is a part-time, 20 hour per week position that requires an individual with a range of skills, experiences, and flexibility.

The Office Administrator plays a critical role in supporting the School by ensuring that a range of administrative and operational functions are handled efficiently, with care, and attention to detail--including managing school supplies, interacting with vendors, completing basic financial bookkeeping functions, and serving as the onsite person to track and address basic human resource issues.  In addition, as the “gatekeeper” for many visitors, parents, student-supporting professionals, and colleagues, the Office Administrator is often the first point of contact for the School and is expected to interact professionally with a wide range of School stakeholders.

This is a terrific job for someone who loves working with teens, believes all students deserve a great education, and who has strong computers skills and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to Office Administrator duties:

  • Coordinating all general office communication systems including phone and email correspondence, incoming and outgoing mail, and incoming and outgoing faxes to assure timely, effective routing of accurate information

  • Working with the co-principals and with the CEEAS central office to manage basic human resource functions including initiating onboarding and exit processes for employees.

  • Supporting the work of the co-principals and other staff on an as-needed basis, with copying, filing, and printing; and by actively supporting school-related events such as award ceremonies and parent events.

  • Coordinating with administrative staff from the OJC on a range of issues including visitor access, facility upkeep and maintenance.

  • Helping to create a positive environment and a culture of hope and high expectations for all

  • Experience in a similar role, with responsibilities that include ordering and managing supplies, maintaining vendor relationships, accounting for expenses, supporting basic human resource functions

  • The ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects

  • Willingness to embrace a school culture that requires all staff to work beyond the traditional school hours and school year in order to create an environment filled with hope and high expectations, where students will radically improve their academic, employment and social skills
