Travis Hill Schools in the Community

OVERVIEW

CEEAS and the Travis Hill Schools seek an experienced Operations Manager who has the passion, creativity, project management, and administrative skills to help us launch and build out our community-based organization in New Orleans. Through work with families, community partners, governmental agencies, the corporate and philanthropic community, and scores of individuals, we aim to create an unbreakable network of support for court involved teens and young adults that will enable them to return to the community successfully, and positively contribute to the vibrant, creative City of New Orleans.

 

The Operations Manager of Travis Hill Schools in the Community will support the start-up and ongoing operations of our community-based work in New Orleans. Our primary focus will be to develop the Welcoming Project, an integrated, durable transition support program that (a) ensures students leaving the Travis Hill Schools and returning to the New Orleans community will be successful upon release and (b) offers lasting, coherent, remote support and advocacy for students who are sent to state juvenile or adult correctional facilities.

 

At CEEAS and the Travis Hill Schools, we develop transformative educational experiences for students held in confinement and build community support for them when they return home. We equip justice involved teens and young adults with the academic and socio-emotional tools they need to be successful as free, contributing members of our democratic society.  At the same time, we bring people and institutions together to fully welcome and support returning students back into the community.

 

Through our work, we intend to end juvenile recidivism one student and one community at a time.  

 

At this time, the organization does not have any staff or resources devoted specifically to working with our students once they return to the community or are sent to long-term placement in state correctional facilities. This will change as we launch this initiative. The Operations Manager will assist in building upon our successful foundation in New Orleans--as a nonprofit committed to transforming the schools inside of the Youth Study Center (YSC) and the Orleans Justice Center (OJC)--and support the organization as we extend our engagement into the City, beyond the walls of the youth detention center and adult jail.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
& PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

As Operations Manager for Travis Hill Schools in the Community, you will have overall operational responsibility for all operations and support of its community-based mission in New Orleans, with occasional support of Travis Hill Schools and CEEAS efforts in the city. This is a start-up position, and the Operations Manager will be responsible for launching key operational steps for community based office and operations. We anticipate Travis Hill in the Community growing from a staff of one to a staff of three to five people over the next 12 to 18 months. Through the Welcoming Project, we anticipate bringing thirty to fifty students into the Travis Hill family over the next 12 months, and supporting them through active partnerships with a number of community based organizations and government agencies and over 100 volunteers.

 

We have a bold vision for our work in New Orleans and establishing Travis Hill Schools in the Community is key element to making that vision real.

 

The Operations Manager will have primary responsibility for:

  • Maintaining established office condition & necessary repairs; procure necessary office supplies and equipment

  • Providing general support to Director of Travis Hill Schools in the Community (Director) and the site team as necessary

  • Planning, support and implementation of projects to establish and achieve near and long-term priorities and goals for Travis Hill Schools in the Community under the director of the Director, with that work centered around launching, growing and managing the Welcoming Project

  • Recruiting and onboarding Travis Hill Schools in the Community staff members, as well as staff for Travis Hill Schools

  • Maintaining and updating basic information about Travis Hill Schools in the Community and the Welcoming Project on our website, social media, and any required collateral materials.

  • Partnering with CEEAS’s Director of Administration to update and maintain office policies and procedures

  • Communicating with Travis Hill Schools and Travis Hill Schools in the Community leadership and administrative team to ensure smooth and adequate flow of information between offices and locations

  • Coordinating internal resources and vendors for sound execution of operations, projects and events, on-time and within budget

  • Supporting financial management and fiscal accountability for operational needs and planning for long term financial sustainability for Travis Hill School in the Community

  • Coordinating with our school-based leadership and transition staff to ensure that programming, culture, and day-to-day operations at Travis Hill School in the Community are aligned with the practices and culture at our schools

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to advance our operational goals, advocate on behalf of our students, and secure resources to support the short and longer term goals and needs of our community based work in New Orleans

  • Ensuring the development and use of effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate operational effectiveness

 

Working with the Director, the Operations Manager will ensure that all Travis Hill School in the Community initiatives are in line with its mission and are responsive to the needs of our target population. It is crucial that the Operations Manager also sets the tone for collaborative working relationships and operational practices that empower high performance and ethical behavior within the organization in New Orleans.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Operations Manager will be thoroughly committed to CEEAS and the Travis Hill School’s mission. Candidates should have proven operations and administrative experience. Start-up or early-stage work in a nonprofit or corporate environment is strongly recommended. A proven commitment to social and racial justice work is ideal.

 

Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

 

  • At least 5 years of operations/administrative experience; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required

  • A track record of effectively supporting a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization from the idea stage through start-up to fully operational

  • Solid technical skills, including a proficiency in MS Office Suite, and Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides), and demonstrated capacity to learn additional internet-based applications (such as Smartsheet, Wix, Smore, and Canva), basic graphic design software, and database management tools

  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to manage and develop strategic objectives

  • A demonstrated willingness to advocate for racial and social justice, as a critical component of one’s work and day-to-day responsibilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, including our students, their family members, community leaders, and individuals working in the public, private and nonprofit sectors

  • Strong written and verbal communication, public relations, and people skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders

  • Action-oriented, innovative, adaptable, and resilient, with an unrelenting commitment to our students and the New Orleans community

  • Passionate, mission-driven, committed to working with a sense of integrity and strong values, and self-directed

  • Willingness to embrace and nurture a culture that will require all staff to work beyond the traditional hours in order to create programmatic norms that make it clear to our students that we care for them, support them, and are there for them, regardless of the hour or situation

BACKGROUND ON CEEAS
& TRAVIS HILL SCHOOLS

CEEAS is a nonprofit organization devoted to developing transformative educational experiences for students held in confinement and building community support for them when they return home.  Historically, CEEAS has primarily worked with state and local juvenile justice agencies to support improved educational programming. In the fall of 2015, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) asked CEEAS to provide support and training to their school located in the New Orleans juvenile detention center (named the Youth Study Center).  Subsequently, in the summer of 2016, OPSB asked CEEAS (via a competitively bid contract) to assume full operational control over the school. We named the school the Travis Hill School, after a local jazz musician who had spent time at the detention center and in prison prior to returning to New Orleans with a message of nonviolence and peace. Results at the end our first year of running the school were quite strong: Students at Travis Hill collectively passed more than four times as many EOC exams than the previous year, and parent and student surveys were overwhelmingly positive.

 

In the late spring of 2017, the Orleans Parish School board awarded CEEAS a second contract--this time to open a school for teens and young adults held at the adult jail in New Orleans (named the Orleans Justice Center). Just a few months ago, we opened up this second Travis Hill School campus.

 

As 2018 unfolds, we are excited to build on our success working with Travis Hill School students inside of YSC and OJC as they return to the New Orleans community.  

SALARY & BENEFITS

CEEAS offers competitive salary and benefits, including health care coverage, and a Simple IRA plan.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications and competitive with similar positions at other community-based nonprofit organizations of comparable size in New Orleans.

Ideal candidates will be available to start work full-time in March 2018.
