Three young men at Travis Hill School earned their diplomas in a powerful ceremony celebrating perseverance, second chances, and the transformative impact of education.
NEW ORLEANS, LA – In a moving ceremony filled with tears, laughter, and joy, three young men received their high school diplomas today at Travis Hill School inside the Orleans Justice Center (OJC). Their families were able to witness this milestone in person—some reuniting after months apart, one after more than two years.
The graduates—DC, AS and KP (names removed for privacy)—stood proudly before their families, teachers, peers, and community leaders, embodying the power of perseverance, redemption, and education.
“This moment proves that with determination and support, you can rewrite your story,” said Sheriff Susan Hutson, who applauded the graduates for their courage. “Education knows no bounds. You’ve shown us all that the pursuit of knowledge is a beacon of hope that can guide us through even the darkest of times.”
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jawan Brown-Alexander reminded the young men of their strength and resilience. “Ahmad, Di’John, and Kenny—you are shining examples of perseverance. In a city like New Orleans, where life’s hurdles can feel insurmountable, you’ve shown that education is a pathway to redemption and empowerment. The future is yours—go seize it with the same strength you’ve shown today.”
Each graduate delivered heartfelt remarks that brought both tears and applause from the audience:
DC thanked his family and teachers for never giving up on him. “They could have turned their backs, but they didn’t. That taught me to keep pushing forward and continue growing as a person.”
AS reflected on finding strength in his younger brother. “I knew I had to change my hot-headed ways to set a better example for him. My family’s support is what got me here, and now I’m ready to move forward, get my CDL, and make them proud.”
KP spoke with grace about profound loss. “I’ve lost so many loved ones, but those losses gave me a strength not many people have. With that strength and the support I’ve found here, I know I can seize the opportunities ahead.”
The ceremony was more than a celebration of diplomas—it was a testament to the power of second chances and the transformative role of education inside correctional facilities.
“As CEO, I am proud that Travis Hill continues to show the world what’s possible when we invest in our most vulnerable young people,” said Byron Goodwin, CEO of Travis Hill NOLA. “Today’s graduates remind us why this work matters—because every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, no matter where their journey begins.”
The ceremony closed with thunderous applause and tearful embraces, as families celebrated not only academic success but also the promise of brighter futures.
